Who Uvex is
Uvex makes personal protective equipment: safety glasses, helmets, gloves, footwear and workwear. Its safety site describes products as designed in Germany. In the US, Uvex safety eyewear is sold under Honeywell, so listings often read “Uvex by Honeywell” or “Honeywell Uvex.”
Why safety glasses show up on a sleep site
Orange-tinted Uvex lenses are a cheap way to filter blue light in the evening, and they have a research track record that most fashion brands lack. In a randomized crossover trial at Columbia University, 14 adults with insomnia symptoms wore amber lenses in Uvex wraparound frames (Honeywell Safety) or clear placebo lenses for 2 hours before bed for a week. The amber lenses improved Pittsburgh Insomnia Rating Scale scores, and actigraphy showed longer total sleep time. The study used the Bandit frame, not the Skyper we list, and was small and short.
Trade-offs
These are industrial safety glasses. They fit over the face with side coverage, which cuts light leaking around the lens, but they look like workwear. Orange lenses also let through more blue-green light than deep red evening lenses. For most people trying evening blue blocking for the first time, the low price makes them a sensible starting point. Compare them on our blue light glasses page and read do blue light glasses work for the wider evidence.
