Good

  • Adjustable output down to very low levels, which suits the under-1-lux target for sleeping rooms
  • Motion mode lights only when someone moves, so it is not on all night
  • Red only, with no blue or green claimed

Not so good

  • $34.95 is a lot for a night light
  • No dusk-to-dawn sensor mentioned, only motion and constant modes
  • No warranty period stated on the product page, only a 30-day return policy

A night light should give you just enough light to walk to the bathroom or check on a baby, and nothing more. This one is red only (600 to 640 nm), dims from 0 to 60 lm and has a motion-activated mode, which is the setup that best fits expert advice to keep the sleeping room as dark as possible, under 1 lux melanopic EDI at the eye (Brown et al., 2022).

Motion mode is the main reason to pick it over a cheaper always-on night light. It means the light is off for most of the night and only comes on when someone gets up. There is also a constant mode for a nursery during feeds.

What it does badly: it is expensive for what it is. BlockBlueLight states a “flicker free” design and certifications (ETL, FCC, CE, UKCA, RoHS, RCM), but publishes no flicker figure, and the product page does not state a warranty period beyond a 30-day return window. It has no daylight sensor listed, so in constant mode it stays on until you switch it.

How it compares: Bon Charge’s Plug In Night Light costs $34.99, peaks at 630 nm and puts out 50 lm, with three fixed brightness levels, a motion mode and a 1-year warranty. The two are close; this one wins on continuously variable brightness. If you need light for a whole bedside lamp rather than a path, the Bon Charge red bulb is brighter, and the Hooga Sleep Light Bulb is a dim red bulb for a lamp you already own.

Keep it low and below eye level. Even red light is light, and the darker the room stays during sleep, the better.
