Good
- Reflective screen with an amber front light, the same approach as the DC-1, at about half the price
- Higher resolution than the DC-1 (1920 × 1440)
- Physical microphone switch and an Android build that works without a Google account
- 30-day returns for a refund of the product price
Not so good
- Backorder only, with up to 2 months to process plus about 5 weeks shipping
- No published spectrum for the front light and no independent review of the tablet yet
- Spec page has errors (battery listed as '6000 m Ah', RAM given as 8 GB in specs and 16 GB in a review quote)
- $399 is a sale price against an $839 list price, which may not last
The Focus is Eazeye’s answer to the Daylight DC-1: a 10.3-inch monochrome reflective LCD that refreshes at 60 Hz, with an amber front light for dark rooms. Eazeye says the front light uses DC dimming, so it does not flicker at low brightness.
On paper it beats the DC-1 on resolution and price. At $399 it costs about half as much, and the screen is 1920 × 1440 against the DC-1’s 1600 × 1200. It runs an Android-based OS that works without a Google login, and has a hardware switch for the microphone.
The catch is buying it. The tablet is on backorder, and Eazeye says orders take up to 2 months to process and about 5 weeks to arrive. The $399 price is a sale against an $839 list. We found no independent review of the Focus yet. Eazeye’s reflective monitor did well with PCPer, which suggests the panel tech works, but that is a different product.
Like Daylight, Eazeye gives no spectrum for its amber light. The spec page also has errors, which is worth knowing before you spend $399 with a small maker. The 30-day return window helps.
