Good

  • No glue, so it peels off without residue, per Coavas
  • Cut to the exact glass size, which suits odd shapes and small windows
  • Many widths and lengths, so wide panes can be covered with fewer seams

Not so good

  • Coavas does not recommend it for double-pane, Low-E, insulated, textured or uneven glass, which rules out many modern bedroom windows
  • Blocks the view and all daylight until you peel it off
  • Light still leaks at seams and at the edges of the glass unless trimmed tight

Blackout film is the niche option on this list. You spray the glass and the film with water, smooth the black vinyl on, squeeze out the bubbles and trim it to the pane. It holds by static cling, so there is no adhesive to scrape off later. Coavas claims it blocks 100% of light and 100% of UV.

Check your glass before you buy. Coavas says the film is not recommended for double-pane, Low-E, insulated, textured or uneven glass. Rabbitgoo, which sells a rival film, warns that applying its film to double-panel windows may cause cracking.

In practice that limits film to plain single-pane glass. For a double-glazed bedroom window, use a blind or curtains instead.

Film also has an obvious trade-off. It blacks out the window around the clock, so you lose the view and the morning daylight that helps set your body clock. That makes it a better fit for a room used mainly for sleep, or for a single small window that leaks light onto the bed, than for a main bedroom window you want open by day.

Sizes run from 11.8 to 45.2 in wide and from 78.7 in to over 390 in long. Choose a width that covers the pane in one piece where you can, because seams are where light gets through. We could not confirm a current US price from a page we could open, so none is shown, and no independent light test exists that we know of.
